The challenge

A commercial property company wanted to reduce energy consumption across a portfolio of office buildings, but its existing systems operated in isolation. Building management systems, smart meters, HVAC equipment, and occupancy sensors generated valuable data that was difficult to access and act upon.

Each building told its own story in its own system; nobody could see the portfolio, and no automated response was possible across systems that didn't talk to each other.

Decision path

The key architectural decision: rather than sending every data point to the cloud, the system processes time-sensitive events locally and transmits only relevant information. That choice keeps connectivity costs and cloud spend proportional to value, and keeps responses fast where speed matters.

Security was designed in from the beginning rather than audited in later: secure connectivity between devices and cloud, and an operating-cost model the client could plan against.
