SCISSR: Rebuilding a Dating App In Place, Without Stopping It

SCISSR is a queer dating and cultural network app connecting LGBT+ women — for dating, friendship, and conversation about fashion, food, culture, and music. When Envion took the project over, the app needed drastic stabilization and a modern, native UI/UX on both iOS and Android, plus analytics and content-management tooling. Rather than a big-bang rewrite, Envion ran the takeover the way rescues actually work: stabilize and maintain the existing codebase while transitioning it incrementally to a new architecture — adding new features the entire time.

SCISSR: Rebuilding a Dating App In Place, Without Stopping It
01

The challenge

The application needed drastic improvements for stable operation, a modern and native UI/UX on both iOS and Android, new features to grow the audience, and analytics to understand what to improve next — along with useful tooling for content management.

As in most project takeovers, the inherited codebase was poorly designed, and a stop-the-world rewrite would have meant abandoning a live product with an active community. The client could not afford to freeze feature development while a new version was built in parallel — the audience would not wait.

02

Decision path

Envion began with a Business Analyst researching the existing dating-app market and revising the development strategy, producing a concrete list of changes and design improvements. The key architectural decision was to rebuild "in place": a methodical, two-prong transition in which the team stabilized and maintained the existing code while incrementally moving the app to a new codebase — never abandoning the running product, never asking the business to pause.

That is the real difference between a rescue and a rewrite. The app kept serving its community every day of the transition, and new functionality shipped throughout, because the old and new code coexisted under a controlled migration path instead of competing in two diverging branches.

03

Envion contribution

Envion's work on SCISSR covered: modular code refactoring across both mobile platforms; a full UI/UX improvement programme to make the experience modern and native on iOS and Android; design and implementation of a smart monetization system; social-media-style interaction models between users; and the analytics and content-management tooling the client needed to run and grow the product.

The team spanned project management, business analysis, product design, iOS and Android engineering, QA, DevOps, and backend development — a complete product team, not a pair of contractors.

04

Delivery

The stack reflects both platforms and the operational backend: Kotlin and Android Jetpack on Android, Objective-C and Swift on iOS, Node.js on the backend, AWS infrastructure, and MongoDB for data — with FacebookSDK, ZendeskSDK, and Pushwoosh integrated for social, support, and engagement.

Delivery ran as a continuous programme rather than a fixed project: strategy and market research first, then parallel stabilization and re-architecture, with feature work sequenced so the community always saw a product that was improving — never one that was "being rebuilt."

05

Outcome and evidence

SCISSR moved from an unstable, poorly architected application to a maintainable, modern product on both platforms — without a service break, without a feature freeze, and without abandoning the existing code. The transition-in-place approach meant every sprint delivered visible value: a stabilized core, a modernized interface, a monetization system, and richer social interaction models.

The engagement continues as an ongoing product partnership, with Envion responsible for the app's evolution.
